How the exam works
- Fully linear: all three papers are sat at the end of Year 13. Nothing is banked early.
- Paper 1: sections 1 to 5 plus 6.1 Periodic motion. 2 hours, 85 marks, 34% of the A-level (60 marks short and long answer, 25 marks multiple choice).
- Paper 2: sections 6.2, 7 and 8, with sections 1 to 6.1 assumed knowledge. 2 hours, 85 marks, 34% of the A-level (60 marks short and long answer, 25 marks multiple choice).
- Paper 3: Section A practical skills and data analysis, 45 marks. Section B one optional topic, 35 marks. 2 hours, 80 marks, 32% of the A-level.
- 40% of the overall assessment contains mathematical skills at Level 2 or above.
- A separate practical endorsement runs alongside the A-level, assessed by teachers and reported separately on the certificate.
Paper 3: the optional topic
Every student enters for one of five optional topics on Paper 3, Section B: Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics, Electronics.
For Paper 3 Section B we teach Electronics and Engineering physics, alongside the more commonly taught options.

A fully worked question
A ball of mass 0.25 kg is attached to a string and moves in a horizontal circle of radius 0.60 m at constant speed, completing one revolution every 0.80 s. Calculate the tension in the string.
v = 2πr ÷ T, using the period of one revolution.

F = mv² ÷ r: the centripetal force equation.
The tension provides the centripetal force.

Which exam board do you teach?

How is AQA A-level Physics assessed?
Three papers, all sat at the end of Year 13, so it's fully linear. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are each 2 hours and 34% of the A-level; Paper 3 is 2 hours and 32%, split between practical skills and data analysis and one optional topic.
Which optional topic do you teach for Paper 3?
For Paper 3, Section B, we teach Electronics and Engineering physics, alongside the more commonly taught options.
How much of the exam is maths?
40% of the overall assessment contains mathematical skills at Level 2 or above, so we treat the maths content as part of the physics teaching, not an afterthought.
What is the practical endorsement?
A separate assessment that runs alongside the A-level. It's assessed by your teachers, not through the written papers, and reported separately on your certificate. We can help you prepare for it, but it isn't part of the exam grade itself.
Does online tuition work as well as in person for A-level Physics?
For most students, yes, including practical and circuit-based topics: a shared whiteboard and screen share cover diagrams and derivations the same way a whiteboard in a room would, and you get written notes afterwards that an in-person lesson doesn't leave behind. If you learn better face to face, book in person in Birmingham or London instead — same tutor, same materials.
